History

The plan aimed to provide a fresh start for England's working poor and boost colonial trade. Georgia was chartered as a buffer for South Carolina against Spanish threats from Florida.

Initially, the charter ensured freedom of worship and banned rum, lawyers, and slavery.

Upon settlement, Oglethorpe befriended Yamacraw chief Tomochichi, securing permission to establish Savannah peacefully. This fostered the town's prosperity, devoid of the hardships typical of early American colonies.

Savannah, America's first planned city, boasts wide streets intersected by leafy squares, serving as communal hubs. Oglethorpe's grid layout included 24 squares, with 22 still existing today.
